Books by X-comm’s publisher, Tony Dierckins
X-communication Titles
X-comm started with True North, a book penned by
Dierckins with former Duluthian Kerry Elliott. Since then
Dierckins has authored about every-other title X-comm has
released, including its series of books celebrating Duluth
and Western Lake Superior through vintage lithographic postcards
(Greetings from Duluth Volumes 1 & 2, Zenith:
a Postcard Perspective of Historic Duluth, and Greetings
from the Arrowhead: The North Shore & Canoe Country)
as well as Crossing the Canal: An Illustrated History
of Duluth’s Aerial Bridge, which was a finalist
for the 2009 Minnesota Book Award.
The Mosquito Book
In 1998 Dennoch Press published The Mosquito Book
by Dierckins and fighter and test pilot Scott D. Anderson.
X-communication later acquired the title and published a revised
edition, updated with the help of X-Comm editorial guru Scott
Pearson. The book is currently out of print
The Duct Tape Books and Calendars
Along with author and humorist Tim Nyberg (and Duct Tape Guy
Jim Berg), Dierckins created the Duct Tape book series
and cowrote the first four Duct Tape books and first
seven Duct Tape Page-A-Day calendars. Originally
published by Duluth’s now-defunct Pfeifer-Hamilton Publishers,
the Duct Tape books and calendars are now published
by Workman Publishing, and Nyberg keeps the Duct Tape humor
on a roll at The
Duct Tape Guyís Webs site.
Books from Bad Dog Press
In the mid-1990s, Dierckins and Duct Tape Guy Tim Nyberg operated
Bad Dog Press, which specialized in parodies of popular self-help
books of the day. Together Dierckins and Nyberg wrote and
published How to Get Rid of a Telemarketer, Rubber
Chickens for the Soul (with Scott Pearson), Who Packed
Your Parachute? (with Danny Naslund), The Habits
of Seven Highly Annoying People, Golf on the Tundra
(with the Frozen Foursome), When I’m and Old
Man, I’ll Wear Mixed Plaids, and, in the spirit
of the Duct Tape series, The WD-40 Book.
“Plaids” and “WD-40”
are still in print and available through Adventure
Publications.
The Coaster Book Series
In 2001 Running Press published a series of books based on
Dierckins’ concept for “Coaster Books,”
small books manufactured like childrens’ board books,
but with perforated pages that can be removed to become coasters
. The series’ catch phrase was “to serve and protect”
and volumes included Lighthouses, Irish Blessings,
and The World’s Shortest Stories. The series
is out of print.
Creative Voices
In 2001 Andrews-McMeel published a Page-A-Day calendar collection
of 365 quotations about creativity and the creative mind selected
by Dierckins.
