Denny Anderson’s Story
Is the Northland’s Story
At nineteen Denny nervously broke the news about President
Kennedy’s assassination to radio listeners throughout
Minnesota’s Arrowhead region. He was the first journalist
to break the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald’s sinking.
And he has anchored the WDIO-TV news since 1970, covering
every major regional story, including The Great Blizzard of
’91, the Glensheen murders and Marjorie Caldwell’s
notorious exploitsnd many more.
Over the years Denny has interviewed a number of politicians
and celebrities, including Jesse Ventura, Richard Nixon, Jimmy
Carter, Walter Mondale, Abbie Hoffman, Jeno Paulucci, Muhammad
Ali, Cher, Jerry Lewis, Elizabeth Taylor, and Johnny Cash.
His newscasts have received many honors, including two Emmy
awards, an Edward R. Murrow award, and three Eric Severeid
awards for coverage of the Wellstone plane crash.
Inside, Denny recalls these stories and many others against
the backdrop of his personal life—growing up on the
Iron Range and becoming an avid outdoorsman, dedicated family
man, private pilot, and Catholic Deacon. Along the way he
shares the insights that come from a life spent on the air
and looks ahead to his future and the future of regional broadcast
journalism.
